Privacy Policy
This page explains what AltMaster collects, what we don't, and what you can do about it. We try to keep the legalese to a minimum.
Summary, in plain English
- We don't collect any personal information on altmaster.io or the free ALT text checker. No signup, no email field, nothing stored.
- We use Google Analytics 4 to count anonymous page views and feature usage. No cross-site tracking, no personal identifiers.
- The Shopify app accesses only the minimum scopes needed to read your products and write ALT text. It does not store your product catalog on our servers beyond what's required to process a bulk run.
- ALT text written by the app lives inside your Shopify store, not in our database. If you uninstall the app, the ALT text stays.
1. The altmaster.io marketing site
The marketing site (this page, the homepage, blog, about, contact) stores no personal data and uses no first-party cookies for tracking.
We load Google Analytics 4 on these pages to understand traffic and which content people read. GA4 is configured to:
- Anonymize IP addresses
- Disable cross-site advertising signals
- Use only the standard
_gacookie
You can opt out of GA4 by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by enabling "Do Not Track" / a privacy-focused browser.
2. The free ALT text checker
When you paste a URL into the
Free ALT Checker at
altmaster.io/alt-text-checker/, the page fetches the target
URL through a public CORS proxy and parses the HTML in your browser to
count images with and without ALT text.
- The URL you check does not get stored on our servers. We never log the URL or its contents.
- Anonymous usage events (e.g., "alt_check_complete", with image counts only) are sent to GA4 so we know how many people use the tool. The URL itself is not included in those events.
- The CORS proxies are operated by third parties (currently corsproxy.io, codetabs.com, allorigins.win, thingproxy.freeboard.io). When the checker fetches a URL, those services see the URL request. See their privacy policies for details.
3. The AltMaster Shopify app
The Shopify app (apps.shopify.com/alt-text-optimizer) installs on your Shopify store and requests only the scopes it needs:
- Read products, variants, collections, images: to scan your catalog and detect missing ALT text
- Write product images (ALT field only): to apply the ALT text you generate
We do not access customers, orders, payments, draft orders, or any other store data outside the product catalog.
Product data is processed in memory during a bulk run and is not retained on our servers beyond what's needed to complete the run. Generated ALT text is written directly into Shopify; if you uninstall the app, the ALT text stays in your store and we delete any session state we held for your shop within 30 days, per Shopify's data retention requirements.
4. Third parties we use
- Shopify: host platform and API. Your relationship with Shopify is governed by Shopify's terms and privacy policy.
- Google Analytics 4: anonymous traffic analytics on altmaster.io.
- OpenAI / generative AI providers: when the app generates ALT text from a template, product title and variant fields are sent to the AI provider that powers generation. No customer data, no order data. The AI provider does not retain the submitted text for training (per the API agreement).
5. Cookies
altmaster.io sets the _ga and _ga_* cookies
from Google Analytics. No advertising cookies, no third-party trackers,
no session cookies. The Shopify app itself runs inside the Shopify admin
and uses Shopify's session handling.
6. Your rights
Under GDPR, CCPA, and similar privacy laws, you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of any personal data we hold about you. Because we hold almost none, most requests are answered with "we don't have anything to give you." For Shopify app data requests, route through the App Store contact and reference your shop URL.
7. Changes to this policy
We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page if anything material changes. For significant changes (new third-party services, new data collection), we'll post a note on the homepage.
8. Contact
Privacy questions or data requests: route through the contact page or open the Shopify App Store listing and use the "Contact developer" link.
