The problem we kept seeing

A typical Shopify store with 200 products has 600 to 1,500 images once you count variants. Filling ALT text for each one, by hand, in the Shopify admin, takes a long weekend. Most merchants try once, get through the bestsellers, and quietly give up.

For years that was a Google SEO problem: image search and Google Shopping. In 2025, it became something bigger: AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity started recommending products to shoppers, and they read the exact same ALT text that Google reads. No ALT text means no recommendation.

What we built

AltMaster is a Shopify app that does the 40-hour job in 3 minutes. You install it, the app scans your catalog, you build a template once ("{product_title} in {variant} by {vendor}"), and one bulk run writes ALT text directly into Shopify across every product, variant, and collection image. Re-run anytime you add new products.

We also publish a free ALT text checker. Paste any URL to see how many images are missing ALT, no signup required. It's how a lot of merchants find us in the first place.

What we believe

• ALT text is product copy, not metadata. It's how machines see your catalog: Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, screen readers. Treat it like product copy and you'll rank.
• Variants deserve their own ALT. A "red shirt" and a "blue shirt" are different products to a shopper and different keywords to a search engine. Generic per-product ALT misses this.
• Your data stays yours. AltMaster writes ALT text directly into Shopify, not into our own database. Uninstall and the ALT text stays. We don't lock you in.
• Pricing should be honest. Free up to 50 products. $1.99/month for unlimited. No "starter / growth / enterprise" ladder, no contact-us tier.
